“Nothing Is Waste; Everything Can Be Reused” — Mariere Charges GSCCI Desk Officers to Champion Green Schools in Delta.
The Executive Chairman of the Delta State Universal Basic Education Board (DSUBEB), Hon. Samuel Mariere, has charged Climate Greening Schools and Climate Change Initiative GSCCI Desk Officers to become advocates of environmental sustainability by cascading the knowledge acquired during a two-day State-Level Step-Down Training and Sensitization Programme on the Green School Climate Change Initiative to teachers and schools across the 25 Local Government Education Authorities (LGEAs) in Delta State.
Mariere gave the charge at the close of the training held at the Board’s headquarters in Asaba, where he urged participants to promote responsible environmental practices in their schools, communities, and homes, stressing that protecting the environment is essential to safeguarding human health and securing the future for generations yet unborn.
The Executive Chairman noted that the essence of the initiative was to create a network of trainers who would not only transfer knowledge to teachers but also become role models in sustainable living through their daily actions.
“It is impossible to train everybody directly; that is why we need to train those who will become trainers. Trainers in our behaviour, trainers in the way we live our own lives, and trainers in imparting knowledge to others,” Mariere said.
He urged participants not to see the training as knowledge meant only for official responsibilities but as a lesson that must begin from their homes and communities.
“Start from your home. Teach your family that nothing is waste; everything can be reused,” he stated, adding that everyone has a role to play in preserving the environment.
Mariere emphasized that environmental sustainability is closely linked to human health, noting that without a healthy environment, the well-being of society and future generations would be threatened.
He explained that although resources may be limited, the Board remains committed to supporting initiatives that will positively impact children, who he described as the ultimate beneficiaries and future custodians of the environment.
“We are providing this because we believe in it, and our children are the ultimate recipients of this training and the future,” he added.
The two-day programme, held on Tuesday 8 to Wednesday 9, 2026, organised by Delta SUBEB in collaboration with the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), was designed to build the capacity of Green School Climate Change Initiative Desk Officers from the 25 LGEAs and relevant officers of the Board for the effective implementation of climate change education and greening practices in basic schools across the State.
Participants were exposed to practical strategies for integrating climate change education into school activities, promoting environmentally friendly practices, and strengthening monitoring mechanisms for sustainable implementation.
As part of the practical sessions, participants were trained on ways to transform waste materials into useful products. Goods produced during the session included biomass briquettes made from sawdust and or coconut husk, and starch for use as alternative fuel, brooms for sweeping and decoration, silhouette artworks, tote bags, and Ankara-covered books.
Beyond promoting environmental sustainability through waste recycling and reuse, the products also present opportunities for small-scale enterprises, providing avenues for income generation, entrepreneurship development, and economic empowerment within communities.
At the end of the training, participants expressed renewed commitment to champion climate change education and drive the implementation of the Green School Climate Change Initiative across schools in Delta State.
They were charged to cascade the knowledge acquired to teachers within their respective LGAs, monitor effective implementation in schools, and promote environmentally responsible practices that will nurture a generation of learners equipped to protect and sustain the environment.
The programme ended with a vote of thanks and a collective resolve to ensure that climate-smart education becomes an integral part of basic education in Delta State.
The Executive Chairman prayed for God’s guidance and journey mercies for participants as they returned to their various destinations, expressing confidence that the knowledge gained would translate into meaningful environmental action across the State.
