June 8, 2026

The Leadership of the Delta State School-Based Management Committee (SBMC) recently paid a courtesy visit to the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) State Office in Asaba, where both bodies reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening Community Participation and Stakeholder Engagement in the advancement of Basic Education in Delta State.
During the visit, the Committee highlighted its efforts towards deepening Community Ownership of Schools, expanding the establishment of SBMCs across Public Basic Education Schools, and supporting programmes aimed at improving teaching and learning outcomes in the State.
Speaking during the visit, the State Chairman of SBMC, Mr. Okpare Sunday, expressed appreciation to Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, the Executive Chairman of Delta State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Hon. Samuel Mariere, and the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) for the opportunity given to members of the Committee to contribute to the development of the Education Sector.
He described serving on the Committee as a privilege and an avenue to support initiatives aimed at improving access to Quality Basic Education across the State.
Mr. Okpare noted that while SBMC structures have been established across Local Government Areas and Communities, the State Executive currently lacks a dedicated office space in Asaba. He appealed for support in providing Office Accommodation to enable the Committee coordinate its activities more effectively and remain easily accessible to Education Stakeholders and members of the public.
In his remarks, the Director of Social Mobilization, Delta SUBEB, and State Coordinator of SBMC, Mr. Felix Eghwujovwo, said the Committee has been fully established across the 25 Local Government Education Authorities (LGEAs) in Delta State and that efforts are ongoing to ensure its effective establishment in all Public Basic Education Schools across the State.
He explained that the SBMC serves as a bridge between Schools and their Host Communities, promoting Accountability, Transparency and Community Ownership of Education. According to him, the Committee typically comprises the Headteacher or School Principal, Teachers’ Representative, Community Leaders, Women Leaders, Youth Leaders, Vigilante Representatives, Religious Leaders, Traditional Rulers and Alumni Representatives where available.
Mr. Eghwujovwo disclosed that through the School Improvement Programme, School Improvement Grants (SIG) were provided to 50 Schools across the three Senatorial Districts of the State to support School Development initiatives and improve learning environments.
He added that 14 Schools have also been selected under the Special Improvement Programme (SIP) for renovation, as well as the provision of Water and Sanitation Facilities, including Toilets, to enhance the wellbeing of Pupils and Teachers.
Earlier, the State Coordinator of UBEC, Mrs. Sharon Dafiluelo, commended the SBMC Executives for taking time to engage with the Commission and reiterated the importance of Community Participation in the management of Public Schools.
She explained that the SBMC was established to encourage Communities to take ownership of their Schools, stressing that when Public Schools are placed under the supportive supervision of their Host Communities, Education becomes a shared responsibility and a priority for the people, just like any other Community Development Project.
According to her, the active involvement of Communities through SBMCs has continued to contribute significantly to School Development, improved Accountability, enhanced Enrolment and better Learning Outcomes across Public Basic Education Institutions.
Mrs. Dafiluelo assured the Delegation that the issues raised during the meeting, including the request for Office Accommodation for the State Executive of the SBMC, would be communicated to the appropriate Authorities, including the UBEC Headquarters, for necessary consideration.
Present at the meeting were the State Chairman of SBMC, Mr. Okpare Sunday; the Secretary of SBMC, Mr. Ofuani Chukwudi; the State Coordinator of SBMC and Director of Social Mobilization, Delta SUBEB, Mr. Felix Eghwujovwo; the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) Representative, Mrs. Beatrice Okolo; the SBMC Desk Officer, Mr. Oliver Isiaye; and other Stakeholders.
