October 5, 2026

The Executive Chairman of the Delta State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Hon. Samuel Mariere, has received the Award of Excellence in the Development of Primary Education in Delta State.
The award was presented during the 2026 World Teachers’ Day celebration held on Monday, October 5, 2026, in Asaba.
Speaking at the event, Mariere appreciated the Delta State Government for its commitment to the development of the basic education sector, noting that the support provided by the government had continued to make the work of teachers easier.
He said the seven issues highlighted by teachers were already being addressed by Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, the Governor of Delta State, adding that significant progress had been recorded in responding to the concerns of teachers.
He reiterated the Governor’s commitment to the welfare of teachers in the basic education sector and assured them of continued support towards improving their professional well-being and working conditions.
On career growth, Mariere disclosed that the government had approved a waiver of certain requirements for advancement from Salary Grade Level (SGL) 14 to SGL 17 for this year’s exercise.
He explained that the career progression of teachers in the basic education sector, which previously ended at SGL 14, had now been extended to SGL 17, adding that teachers who are due for promotion this year and meet the required qualifications would benefit from the approval.
Speaking on employment in the basic education sector, the SUBEB Chairman explained that the ongoing screening exercise would enable the Board to determine the number of vacancies available in public primary schools across the State. He added that recruitment would be based on the identified needs after the completion of the exercise.
The celebration, themed “Standing with Teachers: 60 Years of Protecting the Profession, Advancing Its Status and Shaping the Future,” brought together teachers and education stakeholders from across Delta State to celebrate the teaching profession and recognise the contributions of educators.
The World Teachers’ Day celebration is observed annually as a day set aside by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) and Education International (EI) to recognise the valuable contributions of teachers to nation building and global development.
