
Delta SUBEB to Train 300 Mathematics and Science Teachers on SMASE INSET Programme

The Delta State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), in collaboration with the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), the Federal Ministry of Education and the Delta State Government, will commence a five-day capacity building workshop for newly employed Mathematics and Science teachers across the State.
The training programme, known as the Strengthening Mathematics and Science Education (SMASE), State In-Service Education and Training (INSET) Cycle 1, is designed to enhance effective teaching and learning of Mathematics and Science at the Basic Education level.
The workshop will involve 300 teachers selected from the 25 Local Government Areas of Delta State and is aimed at equipping participants with modern teaching methodologies that promote learner participation and improve classroom delivery.
The training will focus on the application of Activities, Student, Experiments and Improvisation (ASEI) and Plan, Do, See and Improve (PDSI) approaches, which are globally recognised strategies for improving teaching effectiveness and learning outcomes in Mathematics and Science education.
The programme, with the theme “Attitudinal Change in the Teaching and Learning of Mathematics and Science,” seeks to encourage a transition from conventional teacher-centred instructional methods to innovative learner-centred approaches that enhance critical thinking, creativity and practical knowledge among pupils.
The residential training is scheduled to hold from Monday, 16th February to Friday, 20th February 2026, at Anglican Girls Grammar School, Ughelli, Ughelli North Local Government Area, Delta State, with daily sessions commencing from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Participants are required to attend the training with their Android phones, science laboratory coats and National Identification Number (NIN) slips.
The Executive Chairman, Delta State Universal Basic Education Board, Hon. (Barr.) Samuel Mariere, stated that the training forms part of the Board’s continuous efforts to strengthen teacher capacity and improve the standard of basic education in line with the M.O.R.E Agenda of the Delta State Government.
Also, the Director, Teacher Development Department, SUBEB, Mrs. Eru Ezefili, urged all nominated teachers to attend and actively participate in the training programme to enable them acquire relevant knowledge and skills for improved classroom performance.
