November 5, 2025

Four qualifiers have emerged as the Delta State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) on Tuesday, November 4, 2025, held the state qualifying debate competition for the 65th edition of the President’s School Debate Nigeria (PSDN) in Asaba.
The keenly contested event brought together representatives from the three senatorial districts of the State who would go ahead to represent Delta State at the Federal level. Four finalists emerged after a rigorous competition. They are Ikenye Favour from Oshimili South LGA, Efetobor Peculiar from Sapele LGA, Akpofure Charity from Warri South LGA, and Eghwere Destiny from Ughelli North LGA.
Speaking during the State qualifying competition for the 65th President’s School Debate, the Commissioner for Primary Education, Dr. Kingsley Ashibogwu, said that many people could not believe the outstanding performance of Delta State during the last edition of the competition. He noted that the participating children had trained vigorously to become worthy ambassadors and a source of pride to both their parents and the State.
Dr. Ashibogwu commended the teachers for their dedication and commitment in grooming the children to excel, while lauding the Delta State Universal Basic Education Board for its immense contribution to the programme, which has continued to project Delta State positively on the national stage.
“This is a result of hard work,” he said. “Our teachers have invested their time and skill in these children, and their performances clearly show that public schools in Delta State are not lagging behind the private sector. You have demonstrated that our public schools can equally boast of some of the best teachers.”
He urged the children to sustain the excellence they have displayed, noting that their achievements reflect Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s M.O.R.E Agenda, which emphasizes Meaningful development, Opportunities for all, Realistic reforms, and Enhanced peace and security — a vision that continues to drive improvement across the State’s education sector.
In an earlier remark, the Executive Chairman of the Delta State Universal Basic Education Board, Hon. Samuel Mariere, urged the children to keep up their impressive performance as they continue to promote the excellence of public schools through their achievements. He emphasized that the competitors were drawn from the three senatorial districts of the State after a rigorous selection process across the 25 Local Government Areas, explaining that the Board adopted this approach to ensure fair representation of all parts of Delta State.
“When the world sees you, they will understand that one does not have to spend millions to access quality education, because you represent every child in our public schools,” he stated.
Hon. Mariere further noted that once the children excel at the Federal level, they would have the opportunity to represent Delta State at the international stage.
Other dignitaries present at the event included Mrs. Winifred Ighavbota, who represented the Commissioner for Secondary Education, Mrs. Rose Ezewu, and Mrs. Sharon Dafiluelo, the State Coordinator of the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), among others.
The event ended on a cheerful note as the children expressed excitement over the opportunity to represent Delta State at the national level, describing the experience as both inspiring and rewarding. They promised to work even harder to make the State proud at the Federal stage of the competition.
