
The Executive Chairman of the Delta State Universal Basic Education Board (DELSUBEB), Hon. Samuel Mariere, has continued his advocacy and stakeholder engagement tour with official visits to Bomadi and Patani Local Government Areas, reinforcing the Delta State Government’s commitment to strengthening basic education across the state.
The engagements formed part of the Board’s ongoing efforts to promote the education vision of Sheriff Oborevwori, anchored on the MORE Agenda, with emphasis on access, quality, accountability, and community participation in primary education delivery.
Renewed Focus on School Enrolment
During interactive sessions with stakeholders, community leaders, education managers, and parents, Hon. Mariere emphasized that increasing school enrolment—particularly the enrolment of out-of-school children—remains a top priority of the Oborevwori administration. He reiterated the Governor’s determination to make Delta State the leading state in the country in bringing out-of-school children back into classrooms.
The SUBEB Chairman assured stakeholders that the state government is fully committed to fostering quality primary education, noting that education remains the foundation for sustainable development and social stability.
Strengthening Community Partnership through SBMCs
Hon. Mariere highlighted the importance of School-Based Management Committees (SBMCs) as a vital link between schools and their host communities. He explained that SBMCs were established by government to promote shared responsibility in school management, encourage community ownership, and improve transparency and accountability in basic education delivery.

Protecting School Infrastructure
The Chairman also sustained his advocacy for community ownership and protection of school infrastructure, urging residents to safeguard school facilities against vandalism. He stressed that protecting school assets is a shared responsibility and critical to maintaining conducive learning environments for pupils.
Free Learning Materials and Education Policy
As part of measures to reduce the financial burden on parents, Hon. Mariere disclosed that Governor Oborevwori has approved the distribution of free exercise books to pupils in public primary schools across the state.
He further reaffirmed that primary education and enrolment remain free in Delta State, warning that no pupil should be denied access to education on account of financial demands.

Zero Tolerance for Extortion and Misconduct
The SUBEB Chairman issued a stern warning against extortion and illegal collection of fees by any school official, stressing that any headteacher or teacher found guilty of extorting pupils would face immediate dismissal.

Discipline, Parental Conduct, and School Safety
Addressing issues of discipline, Hon. Mariere cautioned parents and guardians against assaulting teachers when their wards are disciplined. He stated clearly that any pupil whose parent or guardian assaults a teacher would be expelled, adding that such pupils would not be admitted into any other public school in the state.

The Chairman concluded by urging Local Government Councils to actively support the Governor’s MORE Agendaas it relates to education, emphasizing that collaboration at all levels of government is essential for achieving sustainable improvements in basic education.
