October 8, 2025
The Executive Chairman of the Delta State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Hon. Samuel Mariere, has announced that the 2025 Basic Education Schools Sports Competition will commence on Thursday, 9th October 2025, across the 25 Local Government Areas of the state, with the grand finale scheduled for Wednesday, 22nd October 2025, at the Stephen Keshi Stadium, Asaba.
In a statement signed by the Executive Chairman, Hon. Samuel Mariere, he stated that the competition is organized in collaboration with the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) and the Delta State Government as part of efforts to promote physical development, teamwork, and the discovery of young sporting talents among pupils in public primary schools.
He explained that the initiative is designed to catch pupils young and build their future through sports, noting that early participation in sporting activities helps instill discipline, teamwork, and confidence among children.
According to the statement, participating pupils will compete in various sporting events such as football, table tennis, Scrabble (board game), athletics — including the 100m race, 200m race, and 4x100m relay — among others.
Hon. Mariere urged Education Secretaries, Head Teachers, and Sports Masters across all Local Government Areas to ensure adequate preparation and full participation of their schools, emphasizing that the Board remains committed to discovering and nurturing young talents who will represent Delta State and Nigeria in future competitions.
He commended the State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, for his unwavering commitment to the development of the education sector and the overall well-being of children in the state.
Mariere noted that the Basic Education Schools Sports Competition is in line with the Governor’s M.O.R.E Agenda, which focuses on Meaningful Development, Opportunities for All, Realistic Reforms, and Enhanced Peace and Security.
“Building children through sports aligns with the Governor’s vision of providing meaningful opportunities for the youth and promoting excellence through holistic education and talent development,” he stated.
He further appreciated the Delta State Government and UBEC for their continuous support and partnership in advancing education and grassroots sports development across the state.
