
SUBEB BOSS REFUTES ALLEGATION PROVES HIS TRANSPARENCY AND ACCOUNTABILITY

Executive Chairman of the Delta State Universal Basic Education Board (D-SUBEB), Hon. Samuel Oghenevwogaga Mariere, has refuted in strong terms, allegations of financial misconduct and contract manipulation, describing them as false, malicious, and baseless.
Speaking during a press briefing at the SUBEB headquarters in Asaba, Hon. Mariere addressed claims that contractors were being compelled to make illegal payments for project approvals and certifications.
Hon. Mariere emphasized that neither he nor any member of the Board members has demanded or received any gratuity, kickback, or financial inducement from contractors or vendors.
The SUBEB Boss disclosed that an emergency meeting with contractors was held on August 19, during which multiple contractors publicly confirmed that no unofficial payments were solicited or made stressing that there are testimonies on record.
Beyond responding to the allegations, Hon. Mariere presented the Board’s performance report for the quarter (June–August 2025), highlighting major achievements in infrastructure, teacher development, digital learning, and inclusive education.
Speaking on the transparency of the board, Hon. Mariere called on the media, civil society groups, and oversight agencies to independently verify SUBEB’s procurement records, audit reports, and project sites and reaffirmed the Board’s commitment to transparency and accountability.
Highlighting key achievements of the Delta State SUBEB to include: 90% of approved projects completed and all contractors duly paid, 162 new classrooms delivered, with 491 classrooms renovated, 164 VIP toilets constructed and 5 solar-powered boreholes installed and the training of 5,511 teachers in diverse programmes, including digital literacy, leadership, and inclusive pedagogy.
Other achievements include the over 167,000 textbooks distributed, alongside tablets, laptops, and interactive learning boards, 218 community tutors deployed to underserved areas to address learning gaps as well as over 2,000 out-of-school children re-enrolled through targeted campaigns.
The Chairman while giving updates on the Orogun SMART School project which is a UBEC sponsored digital campus, lauded the infrastructure’s potential and acknowledged the challenges such as access road and staff housing saying they are already being addressed through approved interventions.
Celebrating Delta State’s success at the World Basic School Debate Championship in Qatar, where five student-delegates were honored by Governor Sheriff Oborevwori with ₦20 million each for their sterling performance.
Responding to questions from Journalists, Hon Mariere maintained that the Board, in line with the MORE Agenda of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, will leave no stone unturned in strengthening public primary schools in the State in areas such as capacity building for teachers, security of both the school facilities and pupils amongst others.
The Chairman who outlined the next steps of the board to consolidate it’s progress, expressed optimism that the Delta State SUBEB understand the leadership of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori is well positioned for continuous growth and positive impact on Deltans.
